Here’s a glimpse of the opening race of the Oakland Running Festival – the 5K race was sold out with 900 runners and a large crowd cheering from the sidelines. The participants were young and old and hailed from Oakland or Richmond or Los Angeles. Many in the crowd were local, and just wanted to cheer the runners – and Oakland – on. We bring you videos of elementary school children, women running their first race, scores of friends panting over the finish line. The crowd was encouraging and boisterous as the runners turned down Lakeshore and sprinted the final few meters of the race. For runners and spectators alike, it was clear that this race was about more than running around the lake; it is about Oakland pride.
