OUSD to celebrate 1,000 African-American honor students
The African-American Education Task Force and the Oakland Unified School District host the 2011 African-American Honor Roll for 1,000 high-achieving students. The annual event honors the city’s top African-American public school students enrolled in Grades 8 through 12.
Today kicks off Affordable Housing Week in Oakland
The 15th annual “Affordable Housing Week” (May 6-15, 2011) features a week of tours, grand openings, discussion panels and other events. Even as state budget battles threaten funds for affordable housing, more than 11 cities throughout the East Bay will celebrate the creation of green, accessible, quality homes for working families and people with special needs, all made possible with public-nonprofit collaboration.

Our representative in the US Congress, Representative Barbara Lee, was the sole congressional voice against the Afghan War in 2001. Now, following the assassination of Osama bin Laden, she calls for an end to the war in Afghanistan.
Arts supporters plead: “For Oakland’s sake, keep the arts in your budget!”
On Friday, the Funding Advisory Committee of the City of Oakland’s Cultural Affairs Commission co-authored a letter to Mayor Jean Quan urging her continued support of the arts in Oakland.
