OUSD to celebrate 1,000 African-American honor students

The African-American Education Task Force and the Oakland Unified School District host the 2011 African-American Honor Roll for 1,000 high-achieving students. The annual event honors the city’s top African-American public school students enrolled in Grades 8 through 12.

The 15th annual “Affordable Housing Week” (May 6-15, 2011) features a week of tours, grand openings, discussion panels and other events. Even as state budget battles threaten funds for affordable housing, more than 11 cities throughout the East Bay will celebrate the creation of green, accessible, quality homes for working families and people with special needs, all made possible with public-nonprofit collaboration.

Polystyrene foam (styrofoam) is made from crude oil. Like all conventional plastics, it is non-renewable, non-biodegradable, and virtually non-recyclable. Polystyrene foam food service ware ends up in landfills, waterways or the ocean. It breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces which are often mistaken for food and ingested by marine animals, birds and fish. Medical evidence also suggests that chemicals in polystyrene foam are carcinogenic and may leach into food or drink. What can be done about it?
